Why Access to Pet Resources is a Social Justice Issue
Amanda Arrington, Senior Director of Pets for Life, Humane Society of the United States
Pet ownership crosses all geographic, racial and socio-economic boundaries, but access to information and services does not. Institutional bias and systemic inequality have impacted pets in ways not always realized in animal welfare. There a great need in our field to understand and deepen the connection between social, racial, and economic justice and animal welfare. We’ll discuss what this means for pet owner support efforts, community based programming and companion animal policies.
Federation Annual General Meeting
Join us to learn more about the work of the WA Federation, grant opportunities, volunteer roles, next year’s Animal Care & Control conference, and participate in the election of new members to the Board. Only current WAFED members are able to vote for board appointments.
Shelter Leadership Roundtable (Track 1)
This is a facilitated conversation of shelter and rescue managers and directors from around the state- another installment of a series of roundtable calls we’ve had throughout 2020. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss issues they’ve been grappling with, share resources and ideas, and to discuss what’s next for animal protection in our state.
EBI Virtual Class (Track 2)
COVID-19 has made many things more challenging, including providing in-person training. As a part of the Federation’s professional development program and our commitment to ensuring our state’s shelter employees are certified and qualified to perform euthanasia by injection, we are shifting our usual Euthanasia By Injection training offering to a two part process for certification. Part one will include the virtual classroom experience, including lecture, videos, and an exam. After passing the online portion, each student will be required to demonstrated practical application under the observation of a certified EBI practitioner and submit an affidavit of completion to receive their certificate.
